Checking a Catalytic Convertor

To check: Connect vacuum gauge, run car at 2500 RPM. If the converter is plugged, the vacuum will slowly drop. A one minute test is plenty of time. If you can't get air out, you can't get air in.
You may have been inspired to check you catalytic convertor after failing an emissions test. If after retarding the timing, and ensuring the EGR system is working correctly, you failed emissions for NOx, then your cat IS bad.
