TFI Failure Modes

Category: Engine Control

Comments

1) dies, suddenly, never to live again, (Escorts)

or

2) runs really bad, after a long drive, but then runs good again, after about a 1/2 hour cool off (my SVO did this)

or

3) engine dies when you wiggle the TFI wires, and has very little advance over the spout, like 20 total instead of 30 degrees. Actually most cars run good when they're broken this way, and you reset the timing to 20 degrees initial. hmmmm.

Some say you should replace the coil with the module, others have said to also replace the PIP in the distributor. This can get expensive. Buy Motorcraft, not Ford, to save money. Neihoff is sometimes the Motorcraft parts for less money.
