Q: Is a compression ratio higher than the stock 8:1, too high for a turbo motor?

Nope.  Ford, Volvo, Porsche, and I, all did it.  And it works good.   Understand what you are up against, and deal with it.  The best reason to do it is; so you can use a stock turbo and not have to run it out of breath.  That's an easy $500 savings, and the car will be MUCH more enjoyable to drive.
