Detailed tachometer removal instructions for the Merkur XR4ti:
![]()
1) Remove the steering column covers, both top and bottom.
2) Remove the 4 screws holding the instrument cluster in.
3) Remove the cluster. The white part of the speedo cable needs to be "pinched" to release it.
4) Remove the two electrical connectors. Push inwards, toward the wires, on each end's clip, to release them.
5) Disconnect the boost gauge hose. It would be a smart move to replace it now.
6) Remove the screws around the edge of the clear plastic.
7) Remove the tach, by removing the 3 flat contact type nuts on the printed circuit side of the cluster.
If this is the first time you've done this, it could take up to an hour. Practice makes it go much quicker, about 10 minutes, but you will still leave blood on the dash somewhere. :)
